Ukraine is closing its embassy in Cuba and downgrading diplomatic relations due to the Cuban government’s support for Russian aggression.
This was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga.
In particular, Ukraine voted against the UN General Assembly resolution on “the need to end the US embargo against Cuba.”
“We remember the Cuban President’s wishes to Putin for “success” in his military aggression against Ukraine. We heard it well,” the head of the foreign ministry emphasized.
He noted that Ukraine is not voting against the Cuban people, this decision is a response to the authorities’ inaction regarding the mass recruitment of Cuban citizens into the Russian occupation army.
Sibiga added that thousands of Cubans have signed contracts with the Russian Federation and joined the ranks of soldiers who are directly participating in hostilities on Ukrainian territory.
“Havana’s unwillingness to stop the mass deployment of its citizens in Russia’s war against Ukraine is complicity in aggression and must be condemned in the strongest terms. Ukraine will always oppose such practices and defend the goals and principles of the UN Charter,” the minister summed up.
Earlier, the Trump administration launched a diplomatic campaign at the UN calling on allies to isolate Cuba due to its participation in the war against Ukraine.
