Ukraine Conducts Another Prisoner Exchange with Russia
Ukraine and Russia have conducted the eighth stage of prisoner exchange within the framework of the June agreements in Istanbul.
This was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Our people are home. Most of them have been in Russian captivity since 2022,” Zelensky said.
Soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the State Border Service, the State Special Transport Service, as well as civilians who defended Ukraine in Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Kherson regions returned home.
The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmitry Lubinets noted that this time it was possible to return the defenders whom Russia had sentenced to long prison terms, as well as the military who were considered missing. Among those dismissed were officers.
The youngest of those released was 20 years old, the oldest was 59. Many of them had spent more than three years in captivity, including the defenders of Mariupol.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War noted that exchanges will continue, and the process is being carried out on the instructions of the President of Ukraine.
