An F-16 fighter squadron was created in Ukraine, which included Ukrainian, American, and Dutch pilots.
This is reported by Intelligence Online.
According to the publication, the unit was formed in recent weeks under strict secrecy to operate the new F-16s. The squadron plays a key role in protecting the skies, particularly over the Kyiv region, which regularly comes under missile and drone attacks.
The unit is made up of American pilots with combat experience in Afghanistan and the Middle East. The Dutch side has brought in pilots who have been trained in European air combat schools. The Western veterans have signed temporary contracts with a six-month rotation and the possibility of extension. They are not part of the official Ukrainian military hierarchy.
As Intelligence Online notes, the squadron performs almost daily missions to intercept Russian Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles, as well as Geran-5 drones. The fighters conduct patrols, particularly at night, to enhance radar coverage and speed of response.
It was previously reported that the Pentagon signed a contract worth $235.5 million for the maintenance of F-16 aircraft, including those transferred to Ukraine.
Recall that Ukrainian F-16s seem to have received new weapons that allow them to effectively and relatively cheaply shoot down Russian kamikaze drones — from Shahed to Gerber.
