Ukraine is increasingly launching long-range strikes on Russian territory instead of exhausting front-line attacks. The strategy of transferring the war to Russian territory is starting to yield some results.

This is reported by the Foreign Policy publication.

According to the authors of the article, German journalist Paul Hockenos notes that President Zelensky outlined such a strategy a year ago – to return the war to Russia.

“The war was brought from Russia, and it is to Russia that the war must be pushed — it is they who must be forced to make peace, it is they who must be pressured to ensure security,” Hokenos quotes Zelenskyy’s words, which were uttered in March 2025.

Since then, Ukraine has been neutralizing strategic facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation.

This means reducing offensive operations, which are very costly for Ukraine, and moving to a long-range war that is expected to weaken Russia’s economy, destroy military production, and undermine the morale of the population.

The authors note that it is this strategy that can bring tangible results in the fifth year of the war.

Ukraine is thus strengthening its positions by striking important Russian targets.

According to historian Ulf Brunnbauer of the University of Regensburg, Ukraine seeks to show Western allies that it has not only the stamina but also the ability to inflict real damage on Russia, thereby strengthening European support.

“This puts Kyiv in a better position for future peace talks, as it increases Russia’s incentives to agree to a compromise,” he explains.

In addition, strikes on Russian territory deter the enemy’s offensive actions, which is key for Kyiv.

“This whole strategy is aimed at the situation on the front in Ukraine. It’s about preventing Russia from seizing Donbas and forcing it to negotiate on terms that Ukraine will control,” emphasized ISW expert George Barros.

It is also noted that Russia’s failures on the front are also affecting public opinion within the country. Although polls show 73% of Russians approve of Vladimir Putin’s performance, this is the lowest level of support since February 2022, according to the Public Opinion Foundation.

Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that on May 16-17, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched a series of strikes on the military and industrial infrastructure of the Russian Federation using unmanned and missile systems.

President Volodymyr Zelensky also showed long-range strikes on Russia over the week and noted that most operations are still ongoing.
