Ukraine will soon receive a new batch of PAC-3 interceptor missiles for Patriot systems, but this is not enough to fully protect against Russian ballistic strikes. At the same time, Kyiv is working on creating its own European missile defense system.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in a comment to United24 Media during the NATO summit in Ankara.
According to the head of state, an agreement has already been reached on the supply of another package of PAC-3 missiles for Patriot.
“Now one package will come, I won’t say when, – one PAC-3 package. We agreed. But this is not enough. The only correct option is an alternative to PAC-3,” Zelensky said.
The President noted that the shortage of interceptor missiles remains, so Ukraine has to negotiate with partners “literally for every 5−10−20 missiles.”
In addition, Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine plans to hold a meeting of the countries of the anti-ballistic missile coalition in the coming weeks, which will work on creating a new missile defense system called Freya.
According to him, seven states that have the necessary production capacities and technologies will join the project.
“Of course, we will build a system. We will build enough in Ukraine and share technologies with all countries,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The President clarified that the issue is the creation of a European missile defense system, which should strengthen the protection of Ukraine and other states from ballistic threats.
As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of talks with the leaders of Italy, the European Council, South Korea, and American lawmakers on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. The main topics of the meetings were strengthening Ukrainian air defense, sanctions pressure on Russia, and Ukraine’s further advancement towards the EU .
As previously reported, Ukraine has asked 40 partner countries to urgently transfer missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems as early as July. This is a mechanism for exchanging for future deliveries that have already been contracted for Ukraine.
By the way, Poland has reported on the possible transfer of missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine . However, there is currently no official confirmation of this information.
