Ukraine has become an important military partner of the US: what does this indicate?

American journalist and columnist Michael Weiss said that Ukraine has significantly strengthened its own military capabilities and has become an important ally of the United States. According to him, granting Kyiv a license to produce Patriot interceptor missiles could be beneficial not only to Ukraine, but also to the American defense industry.

This is what The Atlantic writes about.

Weiss recalled that after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 28, US President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of granting Kyiv licenses to produce Patriot interceptor missiles. Two days later, Trump said that Washington should “exercise caution” on this issue.

Thus, on August 8, Zelensky hinted that Trump had agreed to provide Ukraine with a corresponding license. At the same time, the White House has not publicly confirmed this. According to Weiss, Ukraine’s military position is now stronger than at any time in recent years. Ukraine independently produces a significant part of its weapons, restrains the Russian offensive, regains territory in certain areas, and strikes targets on Russian territory.

“Kyiv can even be called an ‘exemplary ally’ – borrowing the term applied to Israel by Elbridge Colby, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy,” the journalist emphasized.

Weiss believes that Ukraine has transformed from a help-seeker to a source of military technology and know-how. In his opinion, Kyiv can become an important link in the American military supply chain.

The journalist also noted that Ukraine has changed its approach to warfare, including actively using drones to disrupt Russian offensive operations. At the same time, Ukrainian forces are striking Russian oil refineries, export terminals, air bases, and strategic enterprises.

Weiss cited data from the Finnish organization Black Bird Group, according to which Russian troops captured almost five times more territory in July last year than in July this year. In February and June of this year, according to these calculations, Russian troops lost more territory than they captured.

The journalist also drew attention to the development of Ukrainian defense production. According to Rob Lee, a military analyst at the Institute for Foreign Policy Studies, over 80% of the losses in the Russian-Ukrainian war were caused by drones, most of which Ukraine produces independently.

Last month, the Ukrainian government approved the export of weapons and defense technology for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Analysts say this is because Ukraine produces more weapons than it can afford to buy from its own companies.

“Ukrainian drones are so impressive that even those who once criticized the country now want to join this process,” Weiss added.

He also noted that Ukraine is one of the few US allies that has sided with Washington in the war against Iran. He said that Ukraine has sent technical consultants to the region to install and operate the Sky Map system, which uses acoustics and artificial intelligence to detect and shoot down drones.

Weiss stressed that the United States continues to provide Ukraine with free intelligence, including information on targets for strikes on Russian military positions in Ukraine and energy infrastructure on Russian territory. According to the journalist, Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure also serve US interests. The reduction in Russian oil exports, in his opinion, could strengthen Trump’s position in relations with India and China.

“The interrelationship of the wars in Iran and Ukraine has demonstrated that a recipient of military aid from the United States can also be a provider of military aid to the United States,” Michael Weiss emphasized.

It should be recalled that cooperation between the United States and Ukraine in the field of intelligence sharing has returned to its previous high level . This has become an important support for Kyiv against the backdrop of the ongoing war with Russia.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the United States would purchase Ukrainian-made drones . The statement was made during a meeting in Ankara on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
