Ukraine has entered a new phase in its campaign to isolate temporarily occupied Crimea, focusing its attacks on Russian ships delivering fuel by sea. The Institute for the Study of War believes that such tactics are expected to complicate the logistical support of Russian forces on the peninsula.

This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian forces have changed their approach to the campaign to isolate temporarily occupied Crimea. According to analysts, the strikes on sea tankers and fuel tankers indicate an adaptation of Ukrainian strategy after Russia began to more actively use sea routes to supply fuel to the peninsula.

ISW noted that the change in tactics is due to the deterioration of the ground logistics of Russian troops. Regular attacks on transport infrastructure and supply routes have complicated the transportation of goods between Russian territory and occupied Crimea, which has forced the Russian side to increase the volume of sea fuel supplies.

One of the confirmations of the new stage of the campaign in ISW was the attack on the night of July 8-9. According to the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovdy, Ukrainian drones struck 14 Russian ships in the waters of the Sea of Azov.

Among the targets hit were:

  • 12 fuel trucks;
  • tugboat “Alfeo”;
  • 1 dry cargo ship.

“Over the past 96 hours, Ukrainian drones have hit a total of 35 Russian fuel tankers, dry cargo ships, and special vessels,” said Robert Brovdy.

ISW analysts believe that increased attacks on maritime tankers will further disrupt Russia’s ability to provide logistics and transport fuel between Russian territory and temporarily occupied Crimea. The report also notes that fuel problems in Russia and the occupied peninsula have been growing for several weeks.

We will remind you that in temporarily occupied Crimea, as a result of an attack by Ukrainian drones on July 10, the Moynaki electrical substation in Yevpatoria caught fire .

It was previously reported that on the night of July 10, drones also attacked the seaport in Taganrog, Russia, and the Ilya Oil Refinery in Krasnodar Krai . Heavy smoke was recorded in the port area after the hits.
