Ukraine has developed a new type of anti-drone ammunition: what is their special feature?

Amid a new wave of Russian aggression, Ukraine has begun mass-deploying unique small arms ammunition capable of effectively destroying enemy drones at ranges of up to 50 meters. The move is set to change the rules of the battlefield, where small UAVs have become one of the main threats to infantry.

Innovative 5.56mm cartridges, developed as part of the Ukrainian defense initiative Brave1 , are already being tested on the front lines. They are compatible with standard NATO rifles, including the CZ Bren and M4, which are equipped with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

After firing, the cartridge splits into five high-speed fragments, creating a shotgun effect. A series of such shots allows with a high probability to destroy a drone at a distance of up to 50 meters. This allows fighters to repel UAV attacks without additional weapons, just by changing the magazine.

The proliferation of FPV drones, used by Russia for pinpoint strikes on trenches and mobile groups, has forced Ukraine to adapt quickly. Electronic warfare and air defense do not have time to cover the entire front line, and many Russian drones already have protection against interference – in particular, they use fiber-optic control.

In such conditions, each fighter is able to independently respond to a threat from the sky — and not waste precious time searching for cover.

A video published by Brave1 on June 30 shows the successful use of the new rounds in practice. Militaryi confirmed that the rounds are already being used in limited quantities and are being actively scaled up. The plan is to provide each soldier with at least one magazine of such ammunition.

These cartridges are already harmonized with NATO standards, which paves the way for mass production.

The presence of an effective means of combating drones by the infantry will force the Russian command to reconsider its strategy. Without drones, the occupiers will be forced to rely again on artillery or direct assaults. Artillery requires significant resources and exposes the positions of firing points, and assaults without UAV support threaten with high losses.

The introduction of kinetic means of countering UAVs is a new stage in the war of technologies. If earlier the war of drones and electronic warfare was a “game of cat and mouse”, now the Ukrainian military has a quick and cheap way to destroy drones without expensive systems. Countering UAV ammunition can change the course of battles in the near future, because adaptation to a new threat is the key to survival on the battlefield.
