Ukraine has resumed electricity exports to Europe.

The resumption of electricity exports from Ukraine to Europe does not mean a large-scale export of energy resources. It concerns only small volumes that arise at certain times due to a temporary generation surplus.

This was stated by the Vice President for Energy Issues of the Ukrainian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, Alexander Trofimets .

According to him, the first deliveries amounted to only tens of megawatts – about 12 MW during those hours when there is excess production in the power system.

“This isn’t about exporting electricity from the country, as is often portrayed. It’s a tool for balancing the system,” Trofimets explained.

He emphasized that the decision to export is made by NEC Ukrenergo’s dispatcher and only when the power system has sufficient reserve capacity. If the balance deteriorates, exports are immediately stopped.

The surplus is caused by a seasonal increase in hydroelectric power generation due to spring floods, as well as increased solar power generation. During daylight hours, the power system sometimes produces more electricity than it consumes.

In this situation, two options are possible: restricting power plant operations or selling the surplus to the external market. The second option allows energy companies to avoid generation losses and obtain additional funds for repairs and restoration of energy infrastructure following Russian attacks.

At the same time, for a power system synchronized with the European grid, it is normal to both export and import electricity at different times of the day, depending on the balance of production and consumption.

Ukraine previously resumed limited electricity exports after a pause that lasted since November 2025 due to massive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

As a reminder, following a massive attack by the Russian Federation, consumers in seven regions of Ukraine were left without power .
