Ukraine may be moved up in the queue for joining the European Union: the reason is given
Ukraine may be pushed back in the process of joining the European Union amid the increased activity of other candidates, in particular Iceland and Norway. This is due to financial risks and political concerns within the EU.
This is reported by Politico .
Iceland and Norway are increasingly demonstrating their intention to join the European Union, which could affect Ukraine’s membership prospects. At the same time, the question of Ukraine’s accession remains open against the backdrop of the broader enlargement process.
Journalists note that all 13 countries that joined the EU after 2004 continue to receive more from the budget than they contribute. The same situation is expected for the states that are currently on the candidate list, including Ukraine, Moldova, Albania, Serbia and Montenegro.
“These financial considerations mean that it will be difficult to convince current members that these poorer countries should be admitted. Existing members will receive an even smaller share of EU funds,” the journalists write.
Separately, the European Union is expressing concerns about possible political risks after enlargement.
“ We don’t want a repeat of Hungary or Slovakia . We don’t know what will happen in these new countries in 10-15 years. And then we could find ourselves in a situation where we have another Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban,” said one diplomat.
By the way, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos stated that despite the fact that Ukraine is an important partner of the European Union, accession to the bloc by 2027 is impossible .
Previously, the Ukrainian delegation in Brussels received from the European Union the conditions for accession under the three final negotiation clusters.
As a reminder, Deputy Prime Minister for EU and NATO Accession Taras Kachka stated that some European Union countries are suggesting that Ukraine wait 10-20 years before joining the EU.
