Ukraine may introduce water supply schedules during blackouts: what is known
In Ukraine, during long power outages, water supply schedules may be introduced, said Oleksandr Shkin, director of the Ukrvodokanalekologiya Association. Autonomous power sources will be able to maintain water supply in the network, but their capacity may not be enough to lift it to the upper floors of buildings.
This is reported by “News.Live” .
Shkin explained that the stability of the water supply directly depends on the power supply. According to him, autonomous power sources can ensure the supply of water to the network for a certain time, but will not always have sufficient power to supply it to the upper floors of buildings.
The expert confirmed that in the event of prolonged power outages, water supply schedules may be introduced. This will, in particular, be due to the need to deliver fuel and stop generators for maintenance.
According to Shkin, during martial law, it is necessary to ensure a minimum water supply for the population — primarily for drinking, but also partly for sanitary and hygienic needs.
At the same time, Kyiv also warned about the risks of water supply disruptions in the event of a prolonged power outage. Deputy General Director of Kyivvodokanal Serhiy Horkutsenko stated that without external power supply, the company would not be able to provide centralized water supply .
According to him, in the event of outages lasting up to 20 hours, water will be supplied only when the power supply is restored. At the same time, the sewage system is planned to be maintained in operation even in the absence of electricity.
It is noted that on October 9, the Kyiv City State Administration reported about 700 generators at heat and water supply facilities. However, their capacity is mostly enough to provide power to small facilities. Separate diesel power plants or cogeneration plants are required to operate key pumping stations.
Some of the relevant projects have already been implemented, and the rest are planned to be completed by the end of the year. At the same time, full autonomous power supply of the entire Kyiv water supply system in the event of a prolonged blackout is not currently guaranteed.
By the way, Kyiv and Odessa may face the most difficult electricity supply situation during the heating season due to possible Russian strikes on energy infrastructure. In the worst-case scenario, the capital will have electricity for only four hours a day, and in frosts down to −10 °C, outages may last up to eight hours a day.
