Ukraine may miss out on 680 million euros from the EU due to delayed reforms

Ukraine risks missing out on about 680 million euros from the European Union due to two unimplemented reforms in the fight against corruption.

This was reported to the Public by a European Commission official on condition of anonymity.

According to him, these are obligations included in the fourth and fifth tranches of financial assistance. Until these conditions are met, the corresponding funds remain suspended.

One of the demands concerns an increase in the staff of the High Anti-Corruption Court. It involves almost 300 million euros. Another is the entry into force of legislation on the verification of judges’ declarations of integrity. Its cost is estimated at over 380 million euros.

At the same time, the European Commission emphasizes that Ukraine can still receive this money. The deadline for fulfilling the first obligation is June 30, and for the second – September 29.

European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier noted that Ukraine has already implemented most of the necessary reforms. According to him, unfulfilled conditions can be carried over to the next stages, as the mechanism provides for a certain amount of time for their implementation.

As a reminder, Ukraine received the seventh tranche of financing from the European Union within the Ukraine Facility, totaling 2.8 billion euros.
