The critical situation in the Ukrainian energy sector is the result of a long-standing lack of strategic planning and proper infrastructure protection. During the years of full-scale invasion, the authorities failed to diversify generation sources and create the necessary reserves of equipment for rapid network repairs.

This was stated on the air of “Pryamoy” by Oleg Synyutka, a people’s deputy from “European Solidarity”.

“It seems, you know, that on the one hand we have mismanagement and corruption of government officials, including today’s Minister of Energy, and on the other hand, ordinary people, utility workers, energy workers, those who today, in 15-degree frost, are working to provide people with appropriate energy resources,” noted Synyutka.

The politician noted that despite significant amounts of financial assistance from international partners, key transformer substations remain vulnerable.

The People’s Deputy pointed out the lack of results in the program for building new capacities, which the head of government announced. According to Synyutka, officials who have managed the industry in recent years should bear personal responsibility for the current state of affairs.

As a reminder, as of January 16, Ukraine’s power system remains in an extremely difficult state due to constant Russian attacks and difficult weather conditions. As a result of the strikes, consumers in Zaporizhia and Kharkiv regions were left without power, and network restrictions were introduced in Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

At the same time, Ukraine has introduced a state of emergency in the energy sector due to massive Russian attacks on infrastructure facilities. The government reported that this decision should ensure coordination of actions of all services in the capital, regions and communities to stabilize the situation.

As is known, Ukraine’s energy system is in difficult conditions due to intensive Russian shelling and the most severe winter in 20 years. In connection with the emergency situation in the energy sector, the Government has identified a set of measures to overcome its consequences.
