Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he has ordered 100 Rafale fighter jets from France for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a move expected to significantly boost the country’s air power and overall defense capabilities.

LCI was reported to have this.

The declaration of intent to purchase 100 French Rafale fighter jets was signed during Zelenskyy’s visit to France, with French President Emmanuel Macron also endorsing the document.

According to Zelenskyy, this “historic order” aims to equip the Ukrainian Armed Forces with modern aircraft and strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. He made this statement in a comment to LCI.

As Le Figaro notes, the agreement is a declaration of intent: it could be the first step towards a future purchase. The publication emphasizes that the Rafale is a system that can provide a new level of air defense.

The Dassault Rafale is a highly maneuverable multirole fighter capable of air superiority, strike, and reconnaissance missions. It is equipped with the SPECTRA electronic warfare system, which provides missile detection, radar warning, and active threat suppression.

The Rafale is classified as a “4+ / 4.5” generation fighter, featuring advanced avionics and electronics and the ability to perform a wide range of tasks, including air combat, ground strikes, and reconnaissance. It can operate with either one or two crew members, depending on the variant (Rafale C, B, or M).

Weapons and Systems:

  • Cannon: One 30 mm GIAT 30/M 791 revolver cannon with 125 rounds.

  • Hardpoints: Up to 14 stations for external weapons or fuel tanks.

Rockets and Missiles:

  • Air-to-air: MICA (IR and EM versions), Meteor.

  • Air-to-ground/strike: SCALP-EG (cruise missile), AASM (precision-guided bombs).

  • Anti-ship: Capable of carrying Exocet missiles.

  • Nuclear: Can carry the ASMP-A missile.

Electronics and Protection:

  • Electronic Warfare: SPECTRA system for threat detection, jamming, and missile defense.

  • Passive Sensors: Infrared OSF (Optronique Secteur Frontal) system for target detection without activating radar.

  • Radar: Thales RBE2-AA active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

Rafale Advantages:

  • High Maneuverability: The delta-wing design combined with control surfaces provides excellent agility, especially useful in dogfights.

  • Multifunctionality: The Rafale can carry out multiple roles in a single mission — air combat, strikes, and reconnaissance — making it a highly flexible platform.

  • Modern Electronics: The SPECTRA system protects against radar and infrared threats, increasing survivability in modern combat.

  • Passive Detection: The OSF system allows pilots to detect targets without emitting radar signals.

  • Extensive Armament: With numerous hard points, the Rafale can carry missiles, bombs, and even special or nuclear munitions.

  • Operational Range: Its significant combat radius allows for deep strikes or extended patrols over national airspace.

  • High Stability: Twin engines and a carefully engineered design ensure reliability and safety during flight, which is critical under combat conditions.

The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French leader Emmanuel Macron signed a declaration on cooperation in the defense sector.

Earlier, France announced another package of military support for Ukraine, which includes the transfer of additional Mirage 2000 fighters and Aster missiles, intended to strengthen the Ukrainian air defense system.

Recall that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is already negotiating with European partners who can help by providing long-range weapons.
