On Wednesday, October 22, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson signed an agreement on the intention to purchase from 100 to 150 new JAS 39 Gripen E fighters.

This became known from the broadcast of the leaders’ meeting.

According to Kristersson, the agreement is designed for long-term cooperation and does not provide for the immediate transfer of fighters. In particular, this concerns a batch of fighters that are now starting to be manufactured.

“This is about long-term cooperation and the possibility of getting a big deal between our countries. It’s about 100-150 Gripen E-series fighters,” he explained.

The Swedish Prime Minister stressed that this will help build “a very serious Air Force in Ukraine.” He called the agreement the beginning of a long journey of 10-15 years.

Zelenskyy, in turn, noted that Gripen fighters are among the best in the world. Ukraine is already training pilots and technical teams to be able to use them starting next year.

“These are very cool aircraft, strong aviation platforms that allow you to perform a wide range of tasks,” the Ukrainian president added.

As previously reported, Sweden has announced its readiness to expand military assistance to Ukraine and is considering the possibility of transferring Gripen combat aircraft.

As a reminder, Sweden will increase support for the World Bank’s Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Fund (URTF) by 385 million Swedish kronor (35 million euros).
