In 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine may receive the latest missile systems that currently exist only in NATO countries. We are talking about a project that Ukraine is implementing jointly with one of the European countries to strengthen air defense and missile defense, localize foreign technologies in Ukraine and expand the production of modern missiles capable of repelling Russian air attacks.

This was reported by the director of the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, Valentin Badrak, writes Liga.net.

Back in December 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov called Ukraine’s missile program the key to victory and a guarantee of future security in an article about it. Under normal circumstances, the launch of such high-tech projects takes years, but the war and the real threat of Russia’s invasion of Europe opened a unique window of opportunity for Ukraine, accelerating the allies’ decision.

The initiative belongs to Ukrainian industrialists, who held negotiations with partners, organized an audit of several Ukrainian defense industry enterprises and received confirmation of their readiness to participate in production. According to experts, Ukraine can already ensure localization of about 30% in the production of such systems, and this share has potential for growth.

The Ukrainian team is confident that the successful implementation of this project will allow the transition to the joint production of long-range missiles, and in the future to the development of systems for intercepting enemy ballistic missiles. So far, no European country has its own ballistic missiles or missile defense systems capable of destroying ballistic missiles, and the change in the US position and the unpredictability of Trump’s policy are prompting the EU to more actively develop these capabilities.

For Ukraine, this is a chance not only to improve its own developments, but also to become part of European programs to intercept Russian ballistic missiles as an alternative to American systems. The deployment of SAMP-T NG, capable of counteracting ballistics, is predicted for late 2025 – mid-2026.

This project had artificial delays, but after the intervention of the direct executors, the process was unblocked and is ready to accelerate. Ukraine must act proactively and ahead of schedules to integrate its defense industry into the production of new systems capable of protecting not only Ukraine, but Europe from the Russian missile threat.
