Ukraine has purchased American ATACMS ballistic missiles and other weapons from Turkey. In total, we are talking about 70 M39 ATACMS missiles, 12 M270 MLRS installations and ammunition.

This is stated in documents from the US State Department.

According to the documents, Kyiv purchased from Ankara:

  • 70 M39 ATACMS missiles;
  • 12 M270 MLRS installations;
  • 2,524 M26 rockets with cluster warheads;
  • 47 thousand 203 mm cluster artillery shells.

The US State Department submitted documents regarding the arms transfer to Congress on August 3. The transfer is planned to begin after the 15-day period for consideration of the agreement has ended.

There is no separate congressional vote on the arms transfer. If the House and Senate do not pass a joint resolution against the deal within 15 days, the U.S. re-export authorization will automatically take effect.

The US House of Representatives is on recess until August 31, 2026, and the Senate is on recess until September 14, 2026.

Arms deliveries will be carried out through Turkish, Bulgarian, and American defense and logistics companies.

The State Department explained that Turkey wants to get rid of some of its obsolete ammunition and use the funds to modernize its army. Ukraine plans to use the acquired weapons to strengthen its offensive and defensive capabilities in the war against Russia.

The M39 missile is the first production version of the ATACMS. It can engage targets at a range of approximately 165 kilometers. The M39 uses an inertial navigation system with laser gyroscopes and does not have a GPS satellite correction. The missile is equipped with a cluster warhead weighing approximately 560 kilograms, which contains 950 M74 submunitions.

It was previously reported that the US will supply Ukraine with Patriot interceptor missiles for its air defense systems every month . According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, relevant agreements have already been reached, but American missiles may not be enough for Ukraine’s needs.
