Ukraine’s strategic goal is to increase the Russian army’s losses to 200 occupiers for every square kilometer of advance.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated this during a closed briefing, Kyiv Independent reports.
According to Fedorov, in October the Russian army lost 67 soldiers per square kilometer of advancement, in January this figure rose to 165, in February – to 244, in March – to 254, and in April it was 179.
“The situation on the ground confirms that Ukraine has succeeded in significantly slowing the enemy’s advance and is gradually regaining the initiative. At the same time, we are intensifying offensive operations and liberating territory,” the minister stated.
Fedorov also reported that in April 2026, Russia lost 35,203 service members killed and wounded. By comparison, this figure was 35,351 in March and 34,544 in December 2025.
According to the Ministry of Defense, since the beginning of 2026, the total losses of the Russian army have exceeded 141,500 soldiers, of which more than 83,000 were irreparable.
The department notes that for the fifth month in a row, Russia has been losing more personnel than it can mobilize. Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle units play a significant role in this.
Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky stated that the number of offensive actions by Ukrainian defense forces already exceeds the activity of Russian troops.
