Ukraine showed a new air defense missile: what surprised us about the RK-19

Ukraine has unveiled a new RK-19 anti-aircraft guided missile, developed for the Soviet Osa-AKM air defense system. It is capable of intercepting air targets at a distance of up to 10 km and an altitude of up to 5 km.

The RK-19 was shown at the MSPO international defense exhibition in Poland. The missile is intended to replace the Soviet 9M33 ammunition, the reserves of which the Ukrainian military is gradually depleting.

The RK-19 was first announced in April 2026. It was then shown in a video greeting from President Volodymyr Zelensky on Gunsmith’s Day.

The main characteristics of the missile have already been revealed. The RK-19 develops a speed of up to 600 m/s and uses a radio command guidance system. The mass of the missile with the launch container is 163 kg, and the warhead weighs 14.3 kg.

According to the declared characteristics, the RK-19 corresponds to the Soviet 9M33M3 in terms of range and altitude of destruction. At the same time, the Ukrainian missile has a higher maximum speed – up to 600 m/s versus 500 m/s for the Soviet ammunition.

“Osa-AKM” is a Soviet-made all-weather anti-aircraft missile system designed to cover troops and important facilities from air attacks. One self-propelled installation carries six anti-aircraft missiles.

As previously reported, Ukraine has publicly shown for the first time a self-propelled launcher of the new Koral anti-aircraft missile system, designed, in particular, to intercept ballistic targets . During the demonstration, the missile was launched from a launcher on the chassis of a Czech Tatra truck.
