Ukraine sues IOC over return of rights to Russian Olympic Committee

The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to appeal the International Olympic Committee’s decision to reinstate the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee.

This was reported by the NOC of Ukraine and the law firm “Ilyashev and Partners”, which represents the interests of the Ukrainian committee.

The NOC believes that the IOC rushed into making such a decision and did not make sure whether Russia had really fulfilled all the requirements. The Ukrainian side emphasizes that the restoration of the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee contradicts the Olympic Charter, which defines the territorial jurisdiction of national Olympic committees.

The IOC explained its decision by saying that the Russian committee had excluded sports organizations from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine from its membership and had assured in writing that it would no longer work there.

However, the NOC draws attention to the fact that two days later, the head of the Russian Olympic Committee and Minister of Sports Mikhail Degtyarev stated the opposite. According to him, the ROC did not give up any territories and continues to work within the boundaries defined by the Russian constitution, including in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories.

It is these statements, according to the Ukrainian side, that call into question the grounds on which the IOC restored the rights of the Russian committee.

It was previously reported thatthe International Olympic Committee temporarily reinstated the rights of the Russian Olympic Committee.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) have also relaxed or lifted restrictions on Russian athletes, while in football, sanctions against the Russian Federation remain in force.
