Ukraine supports Italy’s idea of a truce for the 2026 Olympic Games

Ukraine expressed support for Italy’s proposal for a global ceasefire during the 2026 Winter Olympics, but stressed that Russia has already violated similar agreements in the past.

This was stated by the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Heorhiy Tykhyi, at a briefing on October 10, reports an NV correspondent.

“We support such a call. In addition, it is worth recalling that Russia started a series of wars during the Olympic Truce. Russia began its invasion of Georgia during the Olympic Truce. And Russia began its invasion of Ukraine during the Olympic Truce. They have very cynical, pragmatic explanations. They know very well that this is a time when the media’s attention is focused on sporting events. And therefore, crimes can be committed during these events. It is very important, first of all, to prevent Russia from doing this again,” Tykhy noted.

The spokesman emphasized that Ukraine is ready for ceasefire negotiations now, without any connection to the Olympics.

“We support the call for a truce. We are ready to go to a truce with Russia, not necessarily waiting for the Olympics, we can agree to a ceasefire now, the US position. And Russia continues to ignore it. If Russia needs an Olympic truce for this, then let there be an Olympic truce. We, in principle, insist that this happen before the Olympics. I think that the Italian minister’s statement is also aimed at stimulating everyone to a peace process, where diplomacy and real steps are significant. And we support this call,” Tykhy said.

As is known, on October 7, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that his country would submit to the UN an official proposal to declare a global ceasefire for the duration of the Winter Olympic Games, which are scheduled to be held from February 6 to 22, 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

“In view of the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, we are submitting to the United Nations a proposal to declare an Olympic truce for all wars, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East,” the Italian Foreign Minister said.

It should be noted that the idea of the Olympic Truce has roots in ancient traditions and has been supported by UN resolutions since 1993 as a symbol of peace, dialogue, and respect between peoples during the Olympic Games.

Recall, earlier, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Heorhiy Tykhyi, reported that Ukraine and the United States are negotiating and “working to agree on all these details” regarding the possible provision of Tomahawk cruise missiles . He emphasized that there is no categorical refusal at the moment. Instead, a detailed and active discussion about technical and organizational nuances is ongoing.
