Ukraine to receive thousands of Shahed jet interceptors from Germany

German defense company Quantum Systems plans to supply Ukraine with tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones, which will, in particular, be used to counter the new Russian jet drones “Geran-4” and “Geran-5”.

This was stated by Quantum Systems Vice President Matthias Lena during the company’s press briefing in Berlin, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to him, over the weekend the parties signed a letter of intent to supply Ukraine with a large batch of SPYS. These drones are capable of intercepting jet targets.

“Over the weekend, an LOI was signed to secure a package of tens of thousands of SPYS, which, as has already been said, are capable of shooting down jet drones,” Lena said.

SPYS is a joint development of Quantum Systems and the Ukrainian company WIY. They operate within the framework of the joint venture Quantum WIY Industries. When developing the new interceptor, the experience of using the company’s systems in Ukraine, in particular the STRILA interceptor drone, was taken into account.

Quantum Systems noted that Ukrainian forces have recently significantly increased the effectiveness of countering Russian jet drones. According to a company representative, the interception rate of such targets was initially very low, then exceeded 30%, and in recent nights reached over 50%.

At the same time, Lena emphasized that this is the result of the complex use of various air defense means, and not just interceptor drones. In particular, Ukraine uses F-16 fighters, which can also shoot down Shahed jets, and is also actively implementing new technologies to combat this threat.

To scale up production, SPYS Quantum Systems plans to use existing facilities created for the production of STRILA interceptors. A company representative said that production could reach several thousand drones per month.

In particular, the first deliveries of the new batch are expected this year.

“Thousands of units are ready for delivery this year,” Lena said.

It was previously reported that Shahed-type kamikaze drones, equipped with an online control system, pose an increased threat to a number of regions of Ukraine. They can attack not only stationary but also moving targets within a designated area.
