Ukraine has used its own FP-7 ballistic missile in combat for the first time. During an attack on October 1, it hit a target in temporarily occupied territory.

This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing a source familiar with the situation.

The ballistic missile has significantly greater strike power than the long-range drones that Ukraine mainly uses to attack targets in Russia. Its high speed and flight path make it difficult to intercept, and its more powerful warhead allows it to hit well-defended targets, including bunkers, bridges, and buildings.

According to available data, the FP-7 is capable of covering a range of about 250 km, climbing to an altitude of up to 60 km, and carrying a warhead weighing over 200 kg. This is more than three times the weight of the warhead of the long-range FP-1 drone.

At the same time, the limited production capacity of the Ukrainian defense-industrial complex may affect the pace of mass production of the FP-7. Therefore, it is currently unknown how large-scale its further use will be.

The development of its own ballistic weapons expands Ukraine’s ability to strike protected Russian military and infrastructure targets. According to the WSJ, Ukraine is now among about ten countries capable of producing ballistic missiles. These include the United States, China, France, Iran, and Russia.

It was previously reported that on October 1, Ukraine first used the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat conditions. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on the result of the first combat use and stated that the next stage will be the production of the missile.
