Ukraine will charge a tax on international parcels: what is the reason and when will it come into effect?
Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko announced that international parcels will soon be taxed in Ukraine.
He told lb.ua about this .
According to him, talks about levying taxes on international shipments began two years ago.
Marchenko explained that most operators who import their goods from abroad legally are uncompetitive in the Ukrainian market. However, taxation will help partially level the imbalance.
“I would like to note that the negative trade balance this year could reach $45 billion. This should cause some sobering up about how and where we are moving,” the minister emphasized.
In addition, he noted that most small packages arrive in Ukraine from “one country, which in a geopolitical sense is sometimes unfriendly.” Most likely, Marchenko was referring to China.
He noted that Ukraine will implement European practice. This means that the tax will be paid when purchasing goods.
“This is how it works in the European Union. We were supposed to get to this point anyway, we’ll just get there in a year. Not right from January 1. We’ll have time to prepare and reorganize,” the head of the Ministry of Finance summed up.
Recall that earlier the National Bank of Ukraine proposed to introduce taxation on parcels worth up to 150 euros, as well as electric vehicles and luxury items.
