President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the exclusive responsibility of the Alliance’s member states.
He stated this during a conversation with the media, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
According to the head of state, any agreement to end the war in Ukraine must be multilateral and involve the United States, Ukraine, European countries, and Russia.
“This is an agreement between the parties: America, Ukraine, Europe, and Russia. At the same time, Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a choice for the Alliance countries. Our choice on this matter has already been made,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The President also noted that Ukraine rejects the demand to abandon its NATO affiliation, which was previously included in the so-called 28-point plan. He added that Kyiv has compelling arguments for this.
Zelenskyy suggested that Russia is attempting to push the future of NATO and the North Atlantic Alliance into separate negotiations between Moscow and the bloc’s member states. However, he emphasized that such agreements cannot be reached without Ukraine.
“These may be agreements between someone and someone else, but not ours. And this is important for Ukraine’s future,” the president concluded.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented details of a 20-point draft framework document on ending the war between Ukraine, the United States, Russia, and the European Union.
As a reminder, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine, during preliminary consultations with US authorities, agreed to a compromise on NATO membership prospects as part of discussions of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
On the eve, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that NATO countries must prepare for the possibility of a large-scale conflict, similar to the wars experienced by previous generations .
Incidentally, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has submitted a bill to the US Congress that would require the United States to withdraw from NATO.
