Spain will provide Ukraine with additional missiles for its Patriot air defense systems. These include five PAC-2 interceptors with a total cost of about 15 million euros.
This is reported by El Pais.
The decision was agreed upon after a meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Madrid.
According to the publication, the PAC-2 missiles are not the latest modifications. Spain is gradually upgrading its complexes to the PAC-3 level. At the same time, these interceptors remain important for Ukrainian air defense. The cost of one missile is estimated at 3-4 million dollars.
Spain has already transferred Patriot missiles to Ukraine in 2024. At that time, Madrid provided assistance twice, but the amount of ammunition was not disclosed.
Sanchez also confirmed that Spain will provide 1 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine this year, in accordance with a bilateral agreement. The total amount of support since the start of the full-scale war will reach about 4 billion euros.
The transfer of even a limited number of missiles comes amid a shortage of Patriot ammunition. European officials estimate that Ukraine used about 700 interceptor missiles during Russia’s massive winter attacks – about the same amount as the United States produces in a year.
The situation is complicated by the growing demand for air defense systems in the world. Tensions in the Middle East are intensifying competition for resources, so even small deliveries are important to support Ukrainian defense.
As previously reported, Ukraine has received a new batch of PAC- 3 missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems . The delivery was made by Germany, which will allow it to strengthen air defense.
