Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced that Ukraine will receive seven F-16 fighters this year. Three aircraft will be combat-ready and able to perform combat missions, and four more will be transferred for use as spare parts donors.
He made this statement to reporters before the start of the NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels.
He emphasized that Belgium has already decided to transfer a larger number of fighter jets to Ukraine than previously promised.
“We are increasing assistance to Ukraine. We will transfer seven F-16s this year: four of them for spare parts, three are ready to perform missions in the skies of Ukraine and defend it from Russian aggression,” he said.
Previously, Belgium promised to transfer only four non-combat-ready fighters to Ukraine to be used as spare parts donors for other F-16s.
Initially, Belgium planned to deliver the F-16 aircraft in 2025–2026. However, specific delivery dates are not yet specified.
The Head of the Ministry of Defense also emphasized the importance of transferring combat-ready fighters, as they have already proven their effectiveness in countering Russian missiles and Shahed-type strike drones.
In addition, Theo Franken announced his intention to increase aircraft deliveries to Ukraine, but did not elaborate on the details.
“I will propose to the government to transfer all F-16s to Ukraine in the coming years – and this will depend on our receiving the F-35. We have our role in protecting the skies, in the nuclear doctrine, and we must fulfill it,” said Theo Franken.
Currently, according to various sources, the Belgian Air Force has more than 40 F-16 fighters in service.
Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that the Belgian Ministry of Defense plans to transfer all of its F-16 fighters to Ukraine by 2029. The pace of deliveries depends on the arrival of F-35 aircraft, which are to replace the F-16 in the Belgian Air Force.
Ukraine also agreed with Belgium and Spain on key areas of defense cooperation ahead of the Ramstein format meeting. These include strengthening air defense, developing unmanned systems, and providing the front with long-range artillery.
