The European Union will allocate 75 million euros for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by Russian attacks.

The financial assistance was announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the G7 summit.

The funds will be used to restore the protective arch over the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chernobyl NPP. The European Union emphasizes that supporting this facility is important for nuclear safety not only in Ukraine, but also in all of Europe.

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal thanked European partners for the decision to finance the restoration of confinement.

“This contribution is an important step towards restoring the protective structure over the destroyed power unit and strengthening the nuclear safety of Ukraine and all of Europe,” Shmyhal noted.

According to him, restoring damaged energy infrastructure and preparing the energy system for new challenges remain among the key tasks of the state.

In addition to funding work at the Chernobyl NPP, the European Union continues to coordinate international support to prepare the Ukrainian energy system for the upcoming autumn-winter period.

“I am grateful to the European Commission and all our partners for their continued support. Together we are strengthening Ukraine’s energy security and resilience, despite the prolonged energy terror,” the minister added.

Ursula von der Leyen also emphasized that the European Union will continue to support Ukraine both in countering Russian aggression and on its path to EU membership, noting the country’s progress in implementing reforms and advancing its European integration course.

As a reminder, on the night of June 7, a Russian drone attacked the site of the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility . The impact damaged the container reception building, but the radiation background remains within normal limits.

As reported, Norway will allocate about $10 million to restore the protective sarcophagus over the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack.
