One of the NATO countries has ordered thousands of German-made artillery shells, which will later be transferred to Ukraine as part of military assistance.
This was reported by the press service of the German defense concern Rheinmetall.
It is known that the contract provides for the supply of several thousand 155-mm artillery shells. Its cost is several tens of millions of euros.
At the same time, the company did not specify which NATO country placed the order. The exact quantity of ammunition was also not disclosed.
As The Defence Blog notes, these are munitions that have already proven themselves well and are widely used on the front in Ukraine. These are 155 mm high-explosive fragmentation shells ER02A1 B/B, which are produced in two versions: with a standard bottom part with a flight range of about 30 km and in a version with a bottom gas generator, which provides a range of up to 40 km.
According to the publication, Rheinmetall produces ER02A1 shells at the Expal Munitions plant in Spain. The concern acquired this enterprise in 2023 to expand the production of large-caliber ammunition outside its main production base in Germany.
It is noted that Ukraine already uses ER02A1 shells with various Western artillery systems, including the Swedish Archer, the French Caesar, the German PzH 2000 and RCH 155.
The company also emphasized that this order is not an isolated one, but is part of a broader initiative to provide Ukraine with ammunition.
Production under this contract has already begun, and the order is planned to be fulfilled by April 2027.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger previously said that Ukrainian drones were not a technological breakthrough , comparing their production to “playing Lego.” The company then issued a statement expressing respect for Ukrainian innovation and war efforts.
