Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union will bring many opportunities to Slovakia.
His words are reported in Denník N.
In his statement, Fico proposed holding a meeting between the prime ministers of Ukraine and Slovakia. Previously, such talks were held in October 2024 near Uzhhorod.
He confirmed his support for Ukraine’s European course, although he said he did not see its future in NATO. According to him, Kyiv should be “as prepared as possible” for EU membership.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia has published an analytical position in which it supports Ukraine’s accession to the EU. The document notes that Ukrainian refugees do not create a burden on the Slovak budget, but instead help fill jobs that have been vacant for a long time.
The Denník N publication notes that after Ukraine joins the EU, Slovakia may lose some of the funds from the cohesion funds, which are the main source of European subsidies.
At the same time, such losses will likely be offset by economic growth and joint development projects.
It is worth noting that despite supporting Ukraine’s European integration, Robert Fico opposes the introduction of new sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Slovakia previously threatened to block new European Union sanctions against Russia if they threatened a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
As a reminder, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the European Union will stop funding Slovakia in the event of further deviation from the bloc’s common course.
