Ukraine’s largest metallurgical plant shut down due to missile attacks: what is known

Ukraine’s largest steel plant, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, is shutting down operations after four missile strikes in the past five weeks. The company said it cannot safely resume production at this time.

This was reported by ArcelorMittal.

The latest attack on the company occurred on September 21. In total, five workers were killed and 17 others were injured in four strikes. One of the injured is in critical condition.

“We have concluded that we can no longer safely operate ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih,” said the company’s CEO, Mauro Longobardo.

After the shutdown, the company will focus on preserving infrastructure, production facilities, and equipment, which should allow for the ability to resume production after the war ends.

ArcelorMittal expects that due to the shutdown of the Ukrainian enterprise, it will suffer about $1 billion in non-monetary losses related to the depreciation of property, production facilities, and equipment.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is a full-cycle metallurgical enterprise that includes ore mining and the production of finished rolled metal.

As a reminder, the Ukrainian metallurgy industry is in a critical state due to Russian strikes . Five furnaces have been destroyed at Metinvest enterprises, two more at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, and a number of key plants are virtually out of operation.
