Ukraine and NATO have reached an unprecedented level of cooperation, but the issue of membership remains unresolved. The main reason for this is said to be the political factor related to Russia’s influence on the allies’ position.

This is reported by The Telegraph .

Journalists note that interaction between Ukraine and the Alliance is currently at a high level both politically and practically. Some states already actually perceive Ukraine as a future NATO member and maintain constant contact and coordination.

At the same time, the key factor holding back accession is not the formal criteria, but the Kremlin’s position and its influence on allies.

“The impossibility of Ukraine joining NATO in the near future is just a political construct. Nothing more, nothing less,” the material notes.

As the journalists emphasize, it is precisely because of this that the issue of membership has been postponed under various pretexts, in particular due to remarks about reforms or the lack of consensus. The article also states that after the start of a full-scale war, the approaches of individual international figures to this issue have changed.

“Ukraine’s membership in NATO could be an even more stabilizing factor for Russia than a situation where Ukraine responds to threats on its own,” the material says.

Separately, journalists refute the narrative that the war began because of the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO. It is noted that Russia’s rejection of Ukraine’s membership is related to the impossibility of realizing its imperial ambitions.

The material also emphasizes that Ukraine is already making a practical contribution to the security of the Alliance, in particular through participation in exercises and the use of modern technologies.

“Ukraine deserves to be the sword of Europe. And the sword of NATO,” the material concludes.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is the exclusive competence of the Alliance’s member states.

Recall that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that during preliminary consultations with the American authorities, Ukraine agreed to a compromise step regarding the prospects of joining NATO within the framework of discussions on US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
