Italian police have detained Ukrainian citizen Sergei K. on suspicion of involvement in the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions in 2022.
This was reported by Spiegel and the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office .
According to the publication, the arrest took place yesterday evening in the province of Rimini on the basis of a European arrest warrant. The Ukrainian, whose name is known but whose last name is not disclosed, is suspected of belonging to the group that organized the explosion of the pipelines.
Sergei was allegedly one of the coordinators of the operation. For transportation to the site of the sabotage, the group used a sailing yacht, rented through intermediaries from a German company using forged documents.
The detainee is charged with jointly committing an explosion using explosives, unconstitutional sabotage and destruction of buildings. His extradition from Italy to Germany is planned for the near future.
As reported by Pryamoy, on March 7, The New York Times reported that non-governmental groups, which could include Russians and Ukrainians, were allegedly behind the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. In particular, “Western intelligence circles” learned the name of a Ukrainian – a private sponsor who allegedly financed the sabotage on Russian gas pipelines . There was no more specific information about who exactly was behind the organization of the explosions of the Nord Streams.
Subsequently, Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov announced that Ukraine had nothing to do with the explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, and expressed confidence that all details of the incident would be established during the official investigation.
In addition, President Volodymyr Zelensky explained the reason for accusing Ukraine of blowing up the Nord Stream . According to him, Ukraine has nothing to do with blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipeline, but accusations against us are beneficial for those who want to slow down aid to the Ukrainian Armed Forces or achieve other goals.
In turn, the US National Security Council did not confirm media reports about Ukraine’s alleged involvement in sabotage at Nord Stream .
As is known, on the evening of September 26, a leak occurred on two Russian gas pipelines “Nord Stream 1” to “Nord Stream 2” under the Baltic Sea. Seismologists recorded at least two explosions before the incident. NATO and the EU announced a possible act of sabotage, and military analysts suggested that the fighting was moving to the Baltic . According to the Danish Maritime Authority, three gas leaks were detected on both pipelines: one in Swedish waters and two in Danish waters.
