Ukrainian counterattacks in the Zaporizhzhia direction and at the junction of the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions are significantly complicating the advance of Russian troops in the Pokrovsk area.

ISW reports this.

According to analysts, the Russian command faces a difficult choice: either prepare for an offensive on the so-called “belt of fortresses” in the Donetsk region, or concentrate resources on holding already occupied positions, particularly in the Hulyai-Polye and Aleksandrovsk directions.

Military observer Konstantin Mashovets notes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ aggressive actions forced the Russians to overthrow marine units. Specifically, this refers to units of the 120th Division of the Russian Baltic Fleet and the 40th Brigade of the Pacific Fleet, which were redeployed from the Dobropolye area to the Aleksandrovskoye direction.

Due to significant losses in the battles for Pokrovsk and near Dobropolye, the Russian group is also forced to reduce the intensity of its offensive operations. At the same time, the loss of reserves weakens the occupiers’ positions in other areas of the front.

ISW analysts emphasize that prolonged counterattacks by Ukrainian forces in the Hulyaipole and Oleksandrivka directions will continue to force Russian command to face a difficult choice—between defense, resource redistribution, and continued offensive operations, particularly during the spring-summer campaign of 2026.

It was previously reported that Russian troops at the front were regrouping and preparing for offensives once green spaces appeared.

As a reminder, Syrsky reported that last week the Russian army increased the intensity of offensive actions on the front , including from March 17 to 20, when the enemy attempted to break through the defensive lines of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in several strategic directions.

Incidentally, the Russian occupation army is demonstrating increased activity at the front amid improving weather conditions.
