The day before, on March 23, a drone flew into the territory of Lithuania, which, according to Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginen, turned out to be Ukrainian.

This was reported by the LRT publication.

“Today we can say that the drone that crossed our airspace and flew into the Varensky district was Ukrainian,” Ruginen said.

She explained that the drone went off course and crashed into a lake in Lithuania. This happened during Ukraine’s operation against the Russian Federation, probably an attack by a UAV on Russian facilities in the Leningrad region.

As noted, the drone could have gone astray due to the influence of electronic warfare equipment.

“The situation was immediately responded to, all the prescribed procedures were implemented […] the responsible services worked at the scene together with the army,” the head of the Lithuanian government assured.

She added that the country would strengthen its air defense capabilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.

At the same time, the prosecutor’s office may investigate the event as one of the Russian Federation’s war crimes.

“Reacting to what happened and the initial information currently available, a decision was made to investigate this case as one of the episodes in the pre-trial investigation launched in 2022 into war crimes in Ukraine ,” the prosecutor’s office representative noted.
