The European Union plans to involve Ukrainian army soldiers to protect the eastern borders from Russia.
This was reported by Politico.
According to European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, the Ukrainian military is “battle-tested” and can help deter a potential Russian attack. However, this is only possible if the fighting in Ukraine is stopped by a peace agreement.
“It would be good if the battle-tested Ukrainian army, after peace is established in Ukraine, was ready to be present in all countries of our border region, starting with the Baltic region and Lithuania, alongside the German brigade and rotating American battalions,” the official noted.
However, this is currently a distant prospect, as Russian soldiers continue to advance into eastern Ukraine, and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin shows no signs of interest in a compromise that could lead to a peace agreement.
Despite this, the EU recognizes that Ukrainian military personnel are the most experienced in Europe. At the same time, their deployment will not affect the dispatch of a German armored brigade to Lithuania, the presence of American troops in the region, and the provision on collective defense under Article 5 of the NATO treaty.
“We Lithuanians have learned from our history that it is better to have multiple security guarantees,” Kubilius stressed, adding that the European Union needs to reinforce NATO’s Article 5 with its own security provisions “with a clear mechanism for their implementation.”
Recall that the European Union is preparing to strengthen the bloc’s eastern borders by using unmanned aerial vehicles.
As you know, the European Commission has proposed four defense projects , according to which the EU plans to counter Russian air aggression.
It was previously reported that the EU has begun active preparations for a potential war with Russia — the European Commission has developed a plan to prepare countries for combat readiness by 2030.
