After a massive Russian attack on February 7, all nuclear power plants in Ukrainian-controlled territory were destroyed. The attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure have sharply increased capacity shortages and increased power outages.
This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The department noted that on the night of February 7, Russian troops carried out a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The main power transmission lines and substations with a voltage of 750 kV and 330 kV, through which electricity is transmitted from nuclear power plants to the power system, were hit.
“At the command of NPC Ukrenergo, the volume of outages has been forcibly increased. Emergency power outages have been introduced in most regions of Ukraine,” the Ministry of Energy reported.
The agency emphasized that balancing the power system is carried out by attracting electricity imports and applying strict consumption restrictions. The main reason for the restrictions is the consequences of a massive attack on power plants and electricity transmission and distribution facilities.
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said that Ukrainian nuclear power plants had stopped generating electricity after the attack. According to him, such strikes pose a serious threat to nuclear safety.
“The IAEA Director General calls for restraint, as the deterioration of the Ukrainian power grid has dangerous consequences,” said Rafael Grossi.
He also noted that during the attack, one power unit of the nuclear power plant was disconnected from the network due to voltage fluctuations, and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant operated on generators for about 1 hour.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that after the Russian strike, a selector meeting was held with regional leaders and responsible services. According to him, during the attack, Russia used more than 400 drones, a significant number of which were “Shaheeds”, as well as almost 40 missiles of various types.
“Unfortunately, there is significant damage to energy facilities, and this has affected the energy situation in virtually the entire country: significant outages,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He stated that the strikes were directed at facilities on which the operation of nuclear power plants depends, which poses a threat to the security of not only Ukraine, but also Europe.
“The Russians have targeted, in particular, energy facilities on which the operation of Ukrainian nuclear plants depends, which threatens not only our security in Ukraine, but also the common security of the region and Europe,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The president also reported that after the attack, the energy supply situation in various regions of Ukraine was discussed, and the necessary forces were mobilized to eliminate the consequences of the shelling and additional teams were being created to work at energy facilities.
“Real pressure is needed on Russia to bring about real changes in their intentions and overall prospects,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As a reminder, on the night of February 7, Russian troops struck Ukrainian energy infrastructure facilities, in particular substations, overhead power lines, as well as the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants.
