The US is offering Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5 provisions, but Washington has hinted that the agreement must be signed by Christmas or the terms could become less favorable.
As Politico reports , this proposal is the strongest and clearest security guarantee that the administration of President Donald Trump has put forward to Kyiv. At the same time, it contains a de facto ultimatum: quickly approving the deal is the key to obtaining maximum guarantees.
Sources note that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and some European leaders are cautious about an agreement without clear guarantees from the United States, fearing a possible re-offensive by Russia.
As a senior administration official said, “the basis of this agreement is to provide really strong guarantees, similar to NATO’s Article 5. But they are only available now if a positive outcome is achieved.”
These are legal and military commitments that can be ratified by Congress and remain in effect even after Trump’s presidential term ends.
At the same time, doubts are expressed in Europe that without Ukraine’s full accession to NATO, these guarantees will be sufficiently effective in practice.
As a reminder, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that security guarantees for Ukraine provide for a US military response in the event of new Russian aggression.
The United States, Ukraine, and key European countries have reportedly made significant progress in intensive talks on ending the war, security guarantees, and the future reconstruction of Ukraine. The American side calls the talks “very positive,” and the package of security guarantees the strongest ever proposed.
By the way, Ukraine and the United States plan to hold a new round of negotiations as part of the preparation of a potential peace agreement. The consultations will involve working groups and military experts who will analyze maps.
