The UN is facing large-scale changes in the organization – a budget cut of more than $700 million and the layoff of about three thousand employees.

This was reported in Bloomberg.

It is noted that these steps are a response to reduced funding from the United States, the largest donor to the UN.

The organization’s budget will be cut by a fifth. It currently stands at $3.7 billion. Officially, the reform program is timed to coincide with the UN’s 80th anniversary.

It is known that the US contribution to the UN budget was 22%, however, Donald Trump has suspended funding and withdrawn from several UN bodies. It is expected that further revision of his policy will lead to further cuts in spending on maintaining the organization.

The intention to carry out radical structural changes due to financial difficulties in the UN was reported back in January 2025. At that time, the UN Secretary-General stated that the organization was facing a “full-scale liquidity crisis.”
