The United Nations already has evidence of numerous cases of sexual violence against Ukrainians, including prisoners of war.

These conclusions are contained in the annual report of Secretary-General António Guterres.

According to the UN chief, there is “credible information” about ill-treatment by the Russian military, special services and related groups. The actions have been documented in 50 official and 22 secret detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia.

In particular, it is certified that:

applying electric shocks to the genitals;

beatings, burns — even on the most intimate parts of the body;

forced exposure and confinement in public shame;

psychological violence to force confessions.

The Secretary-General expressed “deep concern” over such reports. He also did not rule out that Russia could be on the list of countries reasonably suspected of sexual crimes as early as next year.

A summer UN report noted that about 95% of Ukrainian prisoners were subjected to torture — from beatings, strangulation, electric shock to mock executions and sleep deprivation.

In July, more than 40 OSCE member states called for an independent investigation into the torture of Russian prisoners.

Finally, in April, journalists from The Guardian and other Western publications documented the existence of at least 29 so-called special prisons — 18 in Russia and 11 in occupied Ukrainian territories. They hold not only prisoners of war but also civilians, systematically applying torture to the point of violating human dignity — and, most shamefully, with the participation of the Kremlin’s top leadership.

As a reminder, the Donald Trump administration plans to reconsider the tone of official criticism of states accused of systemic human rights violations. Among them is Russia, which traditionally appears in US State Department reports as one of the countries with the worst practices.
