UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned member states about the threat of imminent financial collapse of the United Nations.

Reuters reports this.

In a letter dated January 28, Guterres noted that the financial crisis at the UN is deepening due to non-payment of contributions by states and a budget rule that obliges the organization to return unused funds to countries.

“The crisis is deepening, jeopardizing the implementation of programs and creating the risk of financial collapse. The situation will only worsen in the near future,” the Secretary General emphasized.

According to him, by the end of 2025, member states’ arrears in contributions could reach a record $1.57 billion. In this case, the UN risks running out of funds by July.

The organization’s financial difficulties intensified after its largest donor, the United States, sharply reduced voluntary funding for UN agencies and refused payments to the regular and peacekeeping budgets.

In addition, US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to create a so-called Peace Council , which he said could replace the UN. He also noted that the organization, in his opinion, has not been effective enough in resolving armed conflicts.

As previously reported, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during a press conference, answered a question from a Russian journalist regarding the possibility of applying the principle of self-determination to temporarily occupied Crimea and Donbas.
