UNESCO responds to attack on Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

UNESCO condemned the Russian attack on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which is one of the main spiritual and cultural shrines of Ukraine and is included in the World Heritage List.

This is stated in the statement of the organization.

UNESCO emphasized that attacks on cultural and educational sites violate international law and harm not only buildings but also people who lose access to important cultural and public spaces.

“UNESCO condemns attacks on cultural property, educational institutions, students, educators and media workers protected by international law. Damage to such facilities deprives communities of access to culture, education and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion,” the organization noted.

According to UNESCO, the Assumption Cathedral was seriously damaged as a result of the June 15 strike. Nearby historical buildings, including part of the Lavra fortification complex and the Ivan Kushnyk Tower, were also destroyed.

The international organization stated that it is ready to help the Ukrainian authorities assess the extent of the damage and determine priority steps to preserve cultural heritage.

“UNESCO stands ready to support the relevant authorities in assessing the damage caused to cultural and educational institutions and identifying urgent measures within its mandate,” the statement said.

As previously reported, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga responded to the Russian attack on the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv. Ukraine is initiating procedures within UNESCO and calls on the international community to respond decisively.

As a reminder, during the massive Russian attack on Ukraine on the night of June 15, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged. It has been officially confirmed that the Assumption Cathedral was hit by a Russian attack drone of the Shahed type.
