Unidentified drone spotted near airport in Germany: two planes changed route

Two planes were diverted from Leipzig/Halle Airport after an unidentified drone was spotted near the airport. The incident occurred on August 26, but has only just been reported.

According to police, the drone was spotted near the airport, causing two planes, including a tourist flight, to change their routes.
Law enforcement later determined that the drone belonged to a private individual and posed no threat to the airport’s operations. The drone was being used to film renovations on a house in Großkugel, a settlement near the airport.
Such incidents are common in Germany. According to the German Air Traffic Control Service, six drone sightings have already been recorded in the Leipzig area this year, affecting air traffic. There have been five such incidents in Dresden.
At the same time, situations where a plane has to change its route because of a drone are rare. This time the decision was a precautionary one — especially considering that a drone with explosives was discovered at Leipzig Airport three weeks earlier.
It was previously reported that German special services discovered a cache of two firearms near Berlin. According to investigators, it could have been set up on behalf of Russian special services to prepare sabotage or other forceful actions in Germany.
In addition, German intelligence agencies have linked the incident involving a drone packed with explosives found at Leipzig/Halle airport to Russia. However, the German government has not yet officially accused Moscow, as the investigation is still ongoing. According to US intelligence, the design of the drone and the explosives had characteristics typical of devices from the Russian GRU.
