European countries that are ready to join the so-called “coalition of the willing” are considering sending up to 15,000 troops to Ukraine during the first six months after the end of hostilities.
This is reported by the German publication Welt.
According to sources in Brussels, a number of European states have agreed to participate in a post-war security mission. This involves deploying military contingents to monitor compliance with the ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
France and the United Kingdom play a key role in these plans. Paris and London are ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, in particular by involving ground units to monitor the situation on the ground. The number of military personnel will depend on the commitments of the participating countries, but in the starting period we are talking about a contingent of up to 15 thousand people.
According to the publication’s sources, the concept of security guarantees has already been agreed upon. It was developed by experts from the armed forces of France and Great Britain in close coordination with European structures.
Sources also note that Paris and London are ready to join the monitoring mission even without a formal UN or EU mandate. In this case, an official invitation from Ukraine would be the decisive factor.
According to the plan, the states bordering Ukraine will monitor the ceasefire from the air and sea. Turkey, which, according to preliminary discussions, is capable of monitoring the situation in the Black Sea region, may play a special role in these plans.
As a reminder, British Defense Minister John Healy stated that his country is ready to send its military personnel to Ukraine, but only after peace is achieved.
