“Trump started this war, and we are paying the price,” said one representative of the Gulf country.

The discontent has grown after Trump repeatedly threatened new strikes on Iran, but later postponed them, citing progress in negotiations. At the same time, Iran and its affiliates have continued missile and drone attacks.

Against this backdrop, some states in the region have begun to discuss the feasibility of further hosting large American military bases on their territory. At the same time, the Gulf states continue to depend on the United States as a key security partner and arms supplier.

A further signal for Washington came last week when Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed a mutual defense agreement, a move that a European official said showed the countries were looking to diversify their security partnerships.

“In their understanding, the US is not enough,” the official noted.

Analysts say Trump’s policies in the region are increasingly being described as unpredictable, and the Gulf states have no immediate alternative to their long-standing security partnership with the United States.

A representative of one of the countries in the region noted that, despite dissatisfaction with Washington, the Gulf states are forced to maintain alliances with the United States.

“No matter what we do, we cannot say ‘no’ to the United States,” he said.
