US Ambassador to Ukraine resigns amid disputes with Trump: details

The US Chargé d’Affaires ai to Ukraine, Julie Davis, will leave her post in Kyiv in the coming weeks, citing differences with US President Donald Trump over Ukraine policy.

The Financial Times writes about this.

According to the publication, Davis became disillusioned with her role after Trump decided to reduce support for Ukraine. Sources claim that she has already informed the US State Department of her intention to resign.

In addition, the diplomat plans to fully complete her thirty-year career in public service.

Journalists also note that Davis, who is also the US ambassador to Cyprus, was unpleasantly surprised by Trump’s decision to nominate Arizona businessman and Republican Party donor John Breslow as the new US ambassador to Cyprus.

According to the FT, she was not warned about this decision in advance.

At the same time, the US Department of State officially announced that Julie Davis began her duties as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Kyiv on May 5, 2025, and is currently continuing to work in this position.

In the US, Davis has high authority among diplomats and politicians.

Former US Ambassador to Poland Daniel Fried called her an exemplary diplomat and noted that the administration needs exactly such specialists.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen also praised her work, emphasizing that such an important position as the US Ambassador to Ukraine should not remain without a full-fledged appointment.

According to her, it is critically important for the United States and Ukraine to have an ambassador approved by the Senate working in Kyiv.
