US and Denmark did not reach an agreement on Greenland: the parties agreed to further discussions

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that Copenhagen and Washington had failed to reach an agreement on Greenland.

He said this following a meeting at the White House.

He noted that the discussion was productive, but that the countries’ sides still differed.

“The Kingdom of Denmark continues to believe that the long-term security of Greenland can be ensured with the system that already exists,” the minister said.

In addition, he added that Greenland has been a member of NATO since 1949 and is protected by the Alliance’s fifth article.

He said discussions with the American side would continue. During the meeting, they agreed to form a working group to see if the US and Denmark could “find a common way forward.”

“The US can always ask to increase its presence in Greenland, so we want to hear if the US has any additional requests,” the Danish Foreign Minister emphasized.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed the strategic importance of Greenland to the security of the United States. According to him, the island plays a key role in countering the growing activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.

Meanwhile, the administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing a draft agreement on Greenland , which it plans to propose to the island’s authorities. Washington is discussing the possibility of concluding a Free Association Agreement with Greenland and the United States.

Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has called on US President Donald Trump to stop making statements about a possible annexation of Greenland , stressing that talk of annexing Greenland is baseless.

As is known, against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the seizure of Greenland , the Danish authorities are sending military equipment and defense forces to the island .
