US President Donald Trump said that Washington and Tehran could soon sign a peace deal. He said the signing of the document could take place as early as this weekend in Europe.

The American leader said this while talking to reporters in the Oval Office, Bloomberg reports.

Trump said the agreement provides for the restoration of safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as an obligation for Iran to abandon the creation of nuclear weapons.

“Today we ended the war with Iran,” the US president said during a political event.

Trump said Iran’s supreme leader had already agreed to the terms, although final approval of the document had not yet been completed. He also noted that if the deal is signed, US Vice President J.D. Vance would be present at the ceremony.

However, Iran has not yet confirmed that final agreements have been reached. Iranian media, citing their own sources, report that the text of the potential agreement has not yet received official approval from the country’s leadership.

Thus, despite the optimistic statements from the White House, the negotiation process between the US and Iran is likely still ongoing.

As a reminder, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping amid a new escalation with the United States. However, Washington claims that the movement of ships through the strategic sea route continues as usual.

As reported, on the night of June 11, the United States continued its military operation against Iran and launched a new series of strikes on facilities that, according to the American side, are related to the country’s defense infrastructure.

It should be noted that the US launched new strikes on Iranian territory after an Iranian drone shot down an American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz .
