US and Russian special representatives held talks on Ukraine: first details of the meeting

U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff said his meetings in Florida with Russian Special Representative Kirill Dmitriev were productive and constructive. The talks were held as part of U.S. mediation efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

He wrote about this in X.

According to Witkoff, the talks took place in Florida and concerned US efforts to mediate a peaceful settlement.

“Today in Florida, Russia’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev held productive and constructive meetings as part of U.S. mediation efforts to advance a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict,” said Steve Witkoff.

He also clarified the composition of the American delegation that participated in the meetings with him.

The US delegation included:

• US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant;
• Jared Kushner;
• White House senior adviser Josh Gruenbaum.

Separately, Witkoff expressed his assessment of the results of the negotiations and the role of the US leadership in this process.

“We are encouraged by this meeting that Russia is working to ensure peace in Ukraine, and we are grateful to the US President for his decisive leadership in the pursuit of a strong and lasting peace,” said Steve Witkoff.

The day before, it became known that the Kremlin leader’s special representative, Kirill Dmitriev, began negotiations with the American delegation in Miami on January 31. The meeting started at 8:00 local time, which corresponds to 15:00 Kyiv time.

By the way, US President Donald Trump and his representatives held a series of talks on the war in Ukraine, but Russia stuck to its maximalist demands. As a result , the resolution of the conflict has been postponed, and attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure continue.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said thatactive work is underway to resolve the territorial issue of Donetsk in US-brokered talks to end Russia’s war in Ukraine , calling this disagreement a key issue that is “very difficult” to resolve.

Recall that Washington told Ukraine that it must sign a peace agreement with Russia in order to receive US security guarantees.
