The US launched new strikes on Iranian territory after an Iranian drone shot down an American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
The start of the operation was announced by the US Central Command, CNN reports.
“The mission is a proportionate response to unprovoked Iranian aggression,” CENTCOM said.
According to the US military, the strikes were launched on the orders of the US president and were a response to the helicopter shooting incident that occurred the day before.
Meanwhile, Iranian and pro-Iranian media outlets are reporting explosions in several towns in the south of the country, including the cities of Kohestak, Sirik, and Minab. There is currently no official information on the extent of damage or possible casualties.
US President Donald Trump confirmed that the decision to strike was made after the loss of an American helicopter.
“I think the response has to be very strong, very powerful – and that’s exactly what it is,” Trump said.
According to him, the order to conduct the operation was given immediately after receiving information about the downing of an AH-64 Apache.
The US side is not yet disclosing the list of targets hit in the new wave of strikes. At the same time, the situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains tense amid further escalation between Washington and Tehran.
As reported the day before, US President Donald Trump said that Iran had shot down a US Apache military helicopter while it was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz . According to him, Washington is preparing a response to this incident.
